The Safe and Sound Protocol

Gentle Support for an Overwhelmed Nervous System

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a gentle, evidence-based listening therapy designed to support the nervous system and promote a sense of calm, safety, and connection. Using specially filtered music based on Polyvagal Theory, SSP helps the body shift out of a constant stress response and into a more regulated and social state. This intervention may be especially supportive for some individuals navigating anxiety, stress, trauma, or sensory sensitivities.

The main component of the SSP involves 5 hours of filtered music through over the ear headphones, music which gradually increases in frequency. The frequencies in the music exercise the tiny muscles in the middle ear, specifically those involved in listening to a human voice with a pitch, volume, and tempo to signal safety (called prosody). This process helps your nervous system become more responsive to cues of safety in your environment and in social situations, and these safety cues in turn help regulate your nervous system.
